Up to Us and The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute Announce

New Partnership to Foster Civic Engagement Among Young Americans

Washington, D.C. (January 31, 2019) Up to Us, a national movement empowering young Americans to drive awareness and understanding of our nation’s current economic challenges, today announced a partnership with The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute’s prestigious Leadership and American Presidency program.

In this first year of the partnership, students participating in the Up to Us Campus Competition will have an opportunity to win one of five scholarships from the Reagan Presidential Foundation to participate in the Leadership and the American Presidency (LTAP) program. The comprehensive experience includes housing arrangements, internship placement aligned with student interests, course credit with transfer options to home institutions, and access to the program’s exclusive briefings and events.

The program is designed to introduce college students to hands-on simulations, case studies and creative teaching methods to learn from the greatest leaders and the defining moments in the history of our country. The LTAP program is made possible with the Reagan Presidential Foundation’s partnership with The Fund for American Studies.

“The partnership between Up to Us and The Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute will offer student participants the chance to hone the leadership skills needed to address the growing national debt that we will inherit,” said Hilary Allen, a former Up to Us participant, and currently a community manager at Net Impact overseeing the Up to Us campaign. “The LTAP program made possible by the Reagan Presidential Foundation is launching at a time when the Up to Us movement is drawing interest among a growing number of organizations and thought leaders who are similarly committed to empowering the next generation of leaders.”

“The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is committed to cultivating the next generation of citizen-leaders,” said Tony Pennay, Chief Learning Officer at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. “Through hands-on experiential learning, partnerships with some of the leading museums and historic sites, and exclusive lectures from leaders from across sectors, the Leadership and the American Presidency program provides a unique learning experience. We are excited to partner with Up to Us, whose students care so deeply about making a meaningful impact on fiscal policy. Their participation ensures that we continue to build a robust network of thoughtful young leaders who take seriously their most important role: that of citizen. President Reagan often said that freedom was never more than one generation away from extinction. Through this program and this partnership, we are proud to do our part to ensure opportunities for the next generation.”

Launched by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) and Net Impact, Up to Us is the only national, non-partisan campus-based initiative that galvanizes young people on fiscal sustainability and economic issues. Up to Us is now in its seventh year, and the Reagan Presidential Foundation is the latest partner to join the movement. In December 2018, Up to Us announced a unique collaboration with Civic Dinners to bring the discussion around fiscal issues to collegiate dining halls and dinner tables around the county, and more organizational collaborations will be announced in the 2018-2019 academic year.

The Up to Us Campus Competition has taken place in 50 states to raise awareness on the $21 trillion national debt. In addition to the five internship placements with the Reagan Presidential Foundation’s  LTAP program, Up to Us prizes include paid trips to national conferences, professional development opportunities, the chance to meet with policymakers in Washington, D.C. and $10,000 to the winning team.
