A year ago I sat in an event for Up to Us, and a young man was talking about the national debt and its impact on our generation. The event was filled with attendees that surprisingly did not just attend for the free food. The ideas presented at the event caught my interest and I followed his campaign closely. The message brought unification and empowerment to our generation, something that is not prevalent at the university level. It was too late for me to join the team, but this year it is my turn to be a part of something bigger. I could have never imagined being the team leader of a campaign that had such an impactful message, but once I found out the deadline was close and no one had formed a team at Pace I jumped at the opportunity. For support I asked four incredible individuals to embark in this journey with me.

The first step was easy; what was to follow was unexpected. Upon further research on the Up to Us organization I understood its mission, and the non-partisan aspect of it gave us freedom to educate without having to promote a political party. The more I learned, the more I understood that Up to Us truly believes in the power of change and the forces that drive it. I was, and still am, completely absorbed by the mission of this competition.

Meeting the other team leaders in the Net Impact Conference was an experience like no other. I had the privilege of meeting strong-minded leaders that I can assure you have already impacted our nation. We were all competing, yet there was a sense of camaraderie and support that is not found in everyday situations.

The preparation was intense, and it has taken dedication, but keeping our goal in mind helps us pass obstacles. The weather, the regulations, and the rules can all get in the way but I am pleased to know that a few people realized the importance of being aware about the national debt. Throughout this campaign I have met people with prior education about national debt and they have given me hope; while others looked at me like I was crazy. The truth is this competition has had an impact on some students and that is the only thing I need to keep going.

Giving a voice to millennials is only one part of this campaign. It is as much about leadership, education, endurance and fun. If I could start over I would work harder, sleep less, and act more. I did my best, but more can always be done. I encourage all to embark on this journey of change. It will be worth your while.
