HIGHLIGHTS: UP TO US 2012 – 2013

The University of Virginia Up to Us team was recognized by President Clinton and
Pete Peterson at CGI U 2013 in St. Louis, MO

As elected leaders debated the nation’s fiscal challenges in Washington early in 2013, students competing in Up to Us launched creative campaigns on campuses across the country to educate and engage their peers on the impact of the national debt. The University of Virginia team won 1st prize in the inaugural year of Up to Us, setting a high bar for years to come.

From organizing conferences and debates to contacting members of Congress to creating music videos, contests, and flash mobs, the Up to Us teams made lasting impact on their communities. To get a taste of all the great work teams did, check out the 2013 Campaign playlist embedded below:

The 10 teams that participated in Year 1 of Up to Us were:

American University Brown University
Georgetown University New York University
Rutgers University University of Miami
University of Michigan University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
University of Texas at Austin University of Virginia

Together, these teams held over 55 events on campus, sent hundreds of letters to Congress calling for solutions on the long-term debt, engaged over 1,000 students on Facebook, and generated over 28,000 online actions by students on the debt.

The winners of the inaugural competition were:

  • 1st Place: University of Virginia
  • 2nd Place: Brown University
  • 3rd Place: The University of Texas at Austin
